Dazer II

2009/04/23

I bought a Dazer II. It was an impulse buy after a bad outing with the dog. He went crazy, trying to get to another dog. He barks and whines and it’s so annoying to the neighborhood and me.

I was reluctant to try something like this for a couple of reasons. The main one is I’d rather teach the dog good manners, instead of punishing him for bad behavior. Second, I was afraid the thing wouldn’t work on my dog and wasting $30. I read the reviews at Amazon, and there are plenty of people raving about it, but also plenty of people bitching about its ineffectiveness. It’s supposed to be a humane alternative to using a shock collar, but it’s still punishment.

The other day, I brought my shake can out with us. He’s afraid of it, and he saw me put it in my pocket, so he was on his best behavior. I didn’t want to scare him into acting nicely, but I wasn’t going to put the can back. I wanted him to forget I had it, but he could hear the coins moving around. He gave me his full attention, but I’d rather he be relaxed and enjoy himself outside.

When the Dazer arrived, I was happy to see a battery was included. When you press the button, a red LED lights up to show you it’s working. It’s inaudible to me, but Walter heard it. I gave it a quick shot while the dog was jumping on me, and it startled him.

I’m afraid to abuse it, so I didn’t use it again until this morning. During this morning’s walk, I kept it in my pocket and he didn’t know I had it. When we saw some birds, the dog tried to chase them. I hit the button a couple of times and the dog slowed down. Towards the end of the walk, I saw someone walking his dog on the other side of the street. I don’t know if Walter saw him because he didn’t react. I had my finger on the button just in case, but never had to press it.

It may not work on all dogs, but so far it causes a reaction in mine. It’s $32 at the manufacturer’s site, and $28 at Amazon.
