Back to TOTW

2009/07/28

I’m switching back to Taste of the Wild. When I made the switch from TOTW to Orijen a few weeks ago, it was an overreaction to the dog’s sudden finicky eating. I should’ve let him skip a meal or two if he wanted to. He was waiting for something tastier than kibble. I often caved, the sucker that I am. (I didn’t want him to die of starvation!)

It took a while to figure out, because I use so many treats, to figure out why his shits were softer lately (except during the morning trip). I’m pretty sure it was the Orijen. Someone else complained that her dogs had soft stool while on Orijen. Over the last few days, I’ve been feeding him less Orijen and more TOTW, and it seems his poops are firming up.

I’ve also been using more kibble and fewer treats in his Kongs. As much as he enjoys the Merrick treats, I know those give him soft poops if he has too many of those in a day. They’re good for training Recall and Emergency Recall though, because he’d gladly eat an entire bag of that stuff.

I do Emergency Recall with him about once every couple of days and he’s really good about responding to that command. I’m often tempted to use it in non-emergency situations. I wish his normal Recall was half as reliable, especially at the dog park. We’re not supposed to bring treats to the park, so the only reward I can give him there is praise. He doesn’t care much for that when there are dogs’ asses to sniff.
